Guest Speaker
Major Don Wildish spoke with the club about the Salvation Army, which he has been serving as an officer and Pastor in for 29 years. He and his wife Helene have been married for 33 years and served all over the United States. He was appointed to this area and is taking on the new challenges facing this area. One is the building of the Center of Hope which will provide housing for 125 people. A celebration and dedication for the new Center of Hope is anticipated to happen mid-January 2017. Their current location was built for only 40 and is over capacity with 100+ people being housed each night. Every day local churches and volunteers cook and serve over 300 to 400 meals a day. As the weather gets colder the number of meals served per day will increase to 500 to 600 meals. Major Don said, “The goal is not to run a homeless shelter, but to use the Salvation Center as a way to repair lives.” As pastors they help to encourage the individuals to do better and the starting point is with our Lord and Savior Jesus. Each individual that comes to the center is encouraged to work, save money, and move out. The individuals that are not doing this are asked to leave, because they just might not yet be ready to make that life change. The women and children that come to the shelter are helped by Helene, because those cases can be a little more complicated. As the Holiday’s approach the Salvation Army will need donations to meet the increasing needs of our area. This year they are looking to provide Christmas for over 5000 children in the area. You can help by going to The Woodlands Mall and picking an Angel off The Angel Tree or contact them directly to find out how you can help with Christmas.
